Ford didn't advertise the issue very loudly, but for the 390 detuning of 1969 Ford renamed the engine the 390IP, letting it get installed into GT-optioned cars that year. The last 390GT motor was made in 1968 and it got the good cam.

None other than Chevrolet introduced these engines in 1958 for bigger vehicles. For big-block engines too, Chevy brought the displacements such as 348, 366, 396, 402, 409, 427, 454, 502, and 572 cubic inches.
The short answer is maybe, the FE blocks suffered from "core shift" and so the best way to determine if your 352 can be bored to a 390 (0.05" over) is to have it ultrasonically tested for the cylinder wall thickness. That's the safest way to see if the block can withstand it.

A 352 is a 4.00 inch bore, 3.50 stroke A 360 has a bigger bore at 4.05 inches, but the same stroke as the 352 A 390 uses the bigger bore of a 360, PLUS the added stroke of 3.78 inches. Connecting rods do change based on dimensional requirements, but the connecting rods dont change displacement.

Just wanted to clarify a typo on the first response that said "the 352 and 390 had the same bore". The 360 (a serious torque monster by all accounts when prepped properly) used the 352's 3.5 in stroke crank while the 390 has a 3.78 in.
SOME 390 blocks can be bored .080 to yeild a 428 size bore, but most can't. 427's used the same crank as a 390 (3.78 stroke) 428's used a little longer throw crank (3.98) to yeild the same cubes with a smaller bore ( 4.28 bore is 4.13, 427 is 4.23.

It has a bore of a 390 (4.05 inches (102.87 mm)) and used the 352's 3.5 inches (88.90 mm) rotating assembly. 360s were also constructed with heavy duty internal components for truck use. Use of a standard 352/390 cam for use in passenger cars along with carburetor and distributor adjustment allowed the 360 to give performance similar to that of the 352 and 390 car engines.
I think the 352 had a 3 1/2" stroke, and the 390 has a 3 3/4" stroke. As a bit of trivia, the 360 was only a truck motor (never put in cars), and it was basically a 390 block/bore, with a 352 crank shaft. I just KNEW that knowledge would come in handy some day!
Hmm, I was debating an aluminum block, aluminum head 302 (8.2 deck non stroked) to save nose weight and balance the car (93 mustang hatch). I'm about 450 hp now with a stock block , stock crank aluminum head motor. It is in a street car with a/c and a small powerdyne. I started looking at the coyote and it comes in at 410hp NA and about 450lbs.
